Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of golden berry (physalis peruviana) fruits and banana (Musa Balbisiana) fruits and their peels on diabetic rats with induced acute hepatotoxicity. Fifty adult male rats were classified into 10 groups, group (1), kept as control negative group. Rats (n=45) were injected by single dose alloxan to induce diabetes then divided into 9 groups: group (2), diabetic rats were fed on basal diet (control positive group). Groups (3:6), diabetic rats were fed on basal diet supplemented with dried banana fruit at 5% and 10%, dried peel of banana at 5% and 10%, respectively. Groups (7 : 10), diabetic rats were fed on basal diet supplemented with dried golden berry fruit 5% and 10% and dried peel of golden berry at 5% and 10%, respectively. All rats except control negative were injected by carbon tetrachloride, twice at the end of experiment (4 weeks) to induce acute hepatotoxicity. The results showed that all groups supplementation with either golden berry or banana fruits or its peels at 5% and 10 % caused a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the elevate level of serum glucose, urea, creatinine, TG, TC, LDL-C, VLDL-C, AST and ALT levels, and significantly increased (P<0.05) the level of HDL-C as compared to the control positive diabetic rats. Finally, golden berry, banana fruit and its peels improve the abnormal glucose metabolism, hyperlipidemia as well alleviate hepatotoxicity associated with diabetes. These results are confirmed by the histopathological examinations. Therefore, Golden berry and banana as well as its peels might be used to treat diabetic hepatotoxic patients and protect from their complications.
