Abstract

This study is mainly conducted to design and construct a latent heat storage system to suite the solar still. For this purpose, the thermal properties of paraffin wax(PW),as a promising thermal storage material have been firstly improved by adding nanoparticles of CuO or nanographite with different mass fraction concentrations.Moreove the effect of using helical finned tube in the heat exchanger unit on the charging and discharging processes of the paraffin wax/CuO nanocomposite has been also studied. The experimental results show that the optimal concentration of paraffin wax/CuO nanocomposite is 1%, where it achieves the highest reduction in melting time of 22.22% compared to pure paraffin. An additional reduction in melting time of 42.85% was achieved when a helical finned tube was used. In addition, a reduction of 66.66% of solidification time of paraffin wax/CuO nanocomposite was achieved when the helical finned tube was used. While low improvements were found when nanographite was added to PW compared to CuO nanoparticles. Based on the obtained results in this study, a latent heat storage system was also optimally designed, installed and tested when it is integrated with the single basin solar still.A significant improvement in the single basin solar still was found when the proposed storage system was used.
