Abstract Objectives: Photodynamic therapy is an alternative therapeutic approach for eradicating pathogenic bacteria in periodontal diseases. As the conventional treatment doesn’t completely eliminate periodontal pathogens. For this purpose, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of erythrosine photosensitizer with light emitting diode LED – or diode laser on fusobacterium nucleatum as periodontal pathogens. Material and methods: Standard suspension of F. nucleatum were exposed to Light Emitting Diode (440-480 nm) or green laser (532 nm) in combination with erythrosine (22 µm) for 2, 3 and 5 min irradiation time. using identical irradiation parameters for comparison between treatment groups ( control untreated – photosensitizer only – blue light only – green laser only – blue light with erythrosine – green laser with erythrosine ). Survival of bacteria was determined by counting the number of colony forming units (CFU) after incubation. The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results: Erythrosine in combination with (blue LED or green laser) at exposure time 5 min showed the highest bacterial reduction (98 ٪) with a significant difference than erythrosine alone or light / laser alone. (p = 000.1) Conclusion: Erythrosine was significantly effective photosensitizer in terms of killing of the periodontal pathogen ( fusobacterium nucleatum) when used in combination with either blue LED or Green laser as light sources , which highlights the excellent clinical potential of erythrosine mediated PDT in control of dental plaque biofilm bacteria. Both light sources ( LED – 532 nm diode Laser ) are suitable for activation of erythrosine photosensitizer. |
