Abstract HBV infection is common among rheumatoid arthritis. Multiple theories can explain this association. First and foremost, HBV infects human hepatocytes as well as multiple extrahepatic tissues causing extrahepatic manifestations. On the top of the list is the rheumatologic manifestations including RA. Secondly, HBV reactivation which is caused by biological or non-biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Thirdly, RA itself is a systemic inflammatory rheumatic disease, which might affect other tissues including hepatocytes. |
