Abstract

Ismael and Halim (2010) collected and described five tropical benthic Dinoflagellates from the period 2005-2007 that reported for the first time in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters; Coolia monotis, Ostreopsis sp., Ostreopsis ovata, Prorocentrum lima and Gambierdiscus spp.
The first survey and the first attempt to study the effect of coastal engineering on the spreading Harmful Algal Blooms in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters were made by Ismael and Halim (2007). They found the composition of the phytoplankton population and its diversity totally different from either the Eastern Harbour or Mex Bay. Ninety five species were recorded with 27 species reported as potentially harmful. Bellerochea sp., Leptocylindrus minimus, Skeletonema costatum, Oscillatoria acutissma, Amphidinium carterae, Peridinium quinquecorne and Micromonas spp. are responsible for 17 blooms in one summer season.
