Abstract

This study aimed to detect biochemical parameter chitinase 3 like protein 1 in Lichen planus skin of diseased patients as compared to normal control persons to investigate its possible role in the pathogenesis of this disease.
This case control study was conducted in dermatology outpatient clinic at Beni-Suef University hospital in the period from (1st February 2020 to 31 of August 2020). The study included sixty individuals divided into two matched groups of 30 Lichen planus cases and 30 healthy controls that were chosen randomly according to inclusion and exclusion criteria.
All the sixty individuals included in the study was subjected to a written informed consent for participation in the study, detailed history taking, clinical assessment to determine type, extent and sites of Lichen planus. Then all participants underwent four mm punch skin biopsy which was taken from patients (Lichen planus lesion) & control and it was kept in lysis solution for the stability of the studied parameters and was kept frozen at -80 Celsius till analysis of chitinase 3 like protein 1 by real time -PCR.
The collected data were coded then entered and analyzed using the SPSS version 25.
The study revealed that the average patient age was 41.36 ±13.51 (SD) years and gender distribution as 13.3% of them were females and 86.7% were males with no statistically significant difference between cases and control groups regarding age and sex. The analysis of chitinase 3 like protein 1 in the punch skin biopsy from our studied population (patients with Lichen planus lesion & control skin) reveled that; level of chitinase 3 like protein 1 in lesional skin of Lichen planus patients was significantly higher as compared to normal control persons (p-value< 0.001); where the mean scores were (5.12 vs. 1.02) in cases and controls respectively.
We concluded that the role of chitinase 3 like protein 1 in Lichen planus is a great breakthrough in understanding the pathogenesis of Lichen planus.
