Abstract

Summary
The current study was designed to compare the efficacy and safety of intraocular lens implantation with and without ophthalmic viscoelastic device in phacoemulsification. The present study was conducted on 100 subjects. Patients divided into two groups; the first group formed of (50) patients use saline irrigation during IOL implantation and the second group formed of (50) patients use an ophthalmic viscoelastic device (OVD) during IOL implantation.
Results of the present study showed none significant differences between Groups (I) and group (II) regarding age and gender; number of hypertension, diabetic patients; tamsulosine administration; the mean endothelial cell density (ECD), average size of corneal endothelium cell (ECS) and anterior chamber diameter (ACD); best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA).
There was highly statistically significant difference between both groups as regards the mean operation time (P <0.001) and the mean irrigation–aspiration suction time. (P <0.001)
In the current study, there was no statistically significant difference between both groups regarding the mean phacoemulsification time; the mean phacoemulsification energy; the mean phacoemulsification suction time. There was none statistically significant difference between both groups regarding mean pre-operative IOP.
In the current study, there was highly statistically significant difference between both groups regarding post operative IOP after 1 day (P <0.001); a statistically significant difference between both groups regarding post operative IOP after1 week (P =0.001) and a statistically significant difference between both groups regarding post operative IOP after1 month (P =0.001)
In the present study, there was statistically significant difference between both groups regarding IOP spikes (p = 0.024).
We found statistically significant difference between both groups regarding post operative BCVA after 1 week (P =0.010). While no statistically significant difference was recorded after one day and after one month.
In our study; there was none statistically significant difference between both groups as regards post operative ECD; post operative ECS ; post operative ACD after 1 day; 1 week and 1 month and facilitation of intraocular lens implantation, (p=0.202).
The present study results revealed the presence of postoperative refractive myopic shifts; postoperative Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in (12%) and (6%) of patients in group (II), respectively.
