Abstract

Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death and disability all over the world. Ischemic stroke results from a temporary or permanent reduction of cerebral blood flow that leads to functional and structural damage in different brain regions.
In fact, the incidence of stroke in low-income and middle-income countries exceeded that in high-income, Stroke is the second cause of death after ischemic heart disease
Many studies of brain ischemia have shown the role played by massive ischemia-induced production of reactive oxygen species in degeneration of brain.
The powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vascular-protective effects offered by red beetroot that can reduce the oxidative damage produced by brain ischemia/reperfusion induced .
The present study was performed to study the histopathological changes in the dentate gyrus after global brain ischemia/reperfusion induced by unilateral common carotid artery occlusion on the right side in adult males albino rat and to assess the possible protective effect of red beetroot ethanolic extract.
7.1. Material and methods:
Thirty adult males albino rat (weighting about 200gm) were randomly divided into four groups.
group I: consisted of 12 animals and were subdivided into 2 equal subgroups:
- Subgroup Ia: (Negative Control subgroup): were kept without any treatment for 22 days.
