Abstract

Physical activity within the workplace emerged as primary focus for the design strategies concerning health and well-being in buildings. The offices largely contribute in this resulting sedentary behavior for the employees. That is a result of the prolonged seated time for the employees. The office employees spend at least one third of their day in the office, with almost 70 % of their day in the office seated. That’s why the workplace has a major role in affecting the physical activity for the employees. Therefore, it’s a main health concern to understand the effect of the office design in affecting the employees’ physical activity. The design of the office can influence and affect the range of the physical activities of the employees and consequently their behavior. This perception is represented as the integration values of the form descriptors for the office. The importance of the integration value is that it reflects how the whole layout is connected though the least and the more clear routes. The integration values for the office design present how the employees move within the workspace. The integration values are measured through the space syntax analysis using a program called depth map.One important target for this study is to understand the resulting integration affecting the physical activity as a result of different design of the offices. In this aspect, two applications are applied to offer a classification for the resulting integration. The first application is related to categorizing the floor plate shapes in order to offer a predicted integration. The second application aims to understand the compatibility of the layout typology to the different floor plate shapes that confirms the resulting integration. Therefore, the classifications facilities to understand the physical activity resulting from the office design.Lastly, the findings of this thesis are used to analyze the office spaces of the office National Bank of Egypt. The analysis of the office spaces enables to understand the resulting integration of its spaces and therefore the psychical activity for its employees. .Finally and based on the findings, this study proposes modifications for the NBE office in order to achieve higher integration. Finally, this thesis provides general recommendations for increasing the physical activity in office buildings.
