Abstract

Background: There is a conviction that drug abuse is a global problem, and thus global solutions were required. Early initiation and regular use is often associated with negative consequences. Research on adolescents focuses increasingly on features of the family in predicting and preventing substance use, such as parenting style, parental monitoring, and parental substance use disorder.
Aim of the work: To assess the psychiatric comorbidities and patterns ofparenting style as risk factors among adolescents with SUD.
Methods: Eight participants were enrolled divided into case group (40 adolescents with SUD) and control group of 40 apparently healthy matched ones. A semi-structured sheet was used includingin addition to The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Socioeconomic Status Scale for health research in Egyptand the Parenting Style Questionnaire.
Results:Parental scaling results revealed higher father discrimination and father overprotection SUD group, while mother discrimination, volatility, overcontrolling and positive parenting was significantly lower in SUD group.Adolescents with SUD had statistically significant higher impulsiveness scores than the control group, with higher psychiatric comorbidities like panic disorder (n= 21), anxiety disorder (n=26), OCD (n=13), ADHD (n=25), conduct disorder (n=29), bipolar disorder (n=10), phobic disorder (n=13), social phobia (n=11) and adjustment disorder (n=10).
Conclusions:Parenting style has a significant role in addiction in adolescents. It is commonly associated with many psychiatric disorders and high level of impulsivity and this mandates further assessment for early intervention and better clinical outcome.
