Abstract

Myocardial infarction Ml refers to the process by which areas of
myocardial cells in the heart are permanently destroyed usually caused by
reduced blood flow in a coronary artery due to atherosclerosis and
occlusion of an artery by an embolus (Smeltzer et al., 2010).
This study aimed to:
Assess patients’ knowledge and perception regarding myocardial
infarction.
Design:
A descriptive design was utilized.
Subject:
The study consisted of 90 patients.
Setting:
The study was conducted in coronary care unit and outpatient clinic
in Specialized Hospital, intensive care unit and outpatient clinic El- Azhar
University Hospital in Damietta city.
Data collection:
Data for the present study was collected by using one structured
interview questionnaire sheet which include three parts:
The first part: Sociodemographic characteristic
The Second part: patients’ knowledge questionnaire sheet
The third part: patients’ perception questionnaire sheet
The first part: Sociodemographic characteristic and patient’s personal
history
A-Sociodemographic data include personal data such as age, gender,
marital status, occupation and level of education.
B-Patient’s personal history
This part include the past, present and family history
The second part
It included three parts:
A-Questions related to the patients’ knowledge about MI symptoms.
B- Questions related to the patients’ knowledge about MI risk
factors.
C- Questions related to the patients’ knowledge about MI treatment.
The third part
Questions related to the patients’ perception regarding MI
It is five points likert scale that range from strongly agree to strongly
disagree
The result of this study showed the following finding:
 More than two thirds (71.1%) of the studied patient had
unsatisfactory knowledge about nature and causes of MI.
 The most (93.3%) of the studied patients had unsatisfactory
knowledge about symptoms of MI.
 More than half (54.4%) of the studied patients had unsatisfactory
knowledge of risk factors of MI.
 All of the studied patients had high positive perception about MI,
and the most (81.1%) of them had high positive perception of MI.
 Level of education was considered a factor affecting patients’
knowledge regarding nature, causes and risk factors of MI. But age
wasn’t considered a factor that affecting patients’ knowledge and
perception about MI.
 There was highly significant statistical relation (strongly
correlation) between total patients’ knowledge of MI and total
patients’ perception about MI.
In the light of the findings the following recommendation are
suggested:
 Continuous training program for MI patients should be implemented
to decrease the complications and prevent recurrent attacks.
 All patients have myocardial infarction are in need to an adequate
knowledge to help them to adapt with their life.
 Establishment of a web site, including all information about MI and
all aspects of health education such as different educational
