Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different removable partial denture materials (Co-Cr and PEEK) on the abutment teeth. Materials and methods: Fourteen patients with lower Kennedy class II were selected. They were randomly divided into two groups. group I, the removable partial denture was constructed from conventional Co-Cr. group II, the removable partial denture was constructed from PEEK. After insertion of denture in patient mouth, the abutment tooth was evaluated at the baseline, 3, 6 and 9 months clinically and radiographically. Clinical evaluation was done by periodontal probe to measure the pocket depth and clinical attachment level, and the periotest was used to evaluate tooth mobility. Radiographic evaluation was done by digital periapical radiograph to evaluate bone loss. Data was collected and statistically analysed by using ANOVA test. Results: There was statistically significant difference between the two groups, after six and nine months of follow up regarding the pocket depth, clinical attachment level and periotest. The bone height changes values of PEEK RPD group was lower than that of the conventional Co-Cr RPD group, the difference was statistically significant after nine months follow up periods, as p-value < 0.05.There was gradual increase in the all measured parameters in the two studied groups throughout the follow up period. Conclusion: The removable partial denture frameworks constructed from PEEK material showed more favorable effect on the abutment teeth in class II distal extension bases than the conventional metallic frameworks in terms of Pocket depth, clinical attachment level as well as bone height changes.
