Abstract

Effective Communication skills between health care providers and parturient women One of the most important factors that enhance women’s satisfaction, compliance and overall health outcome .The ability of health care providers to communicate efficiently with others is at the core of all customer care. The response of the woman to health care service is influenced by direct and kind communication. Maternity care covers most of woman life cycle that starts from preconception till after menopause. Effective communication of health care providers encourage women to continue receiving the appropriate care and seeking health care facilities. So, effective communication skills are the core of high quality care. Effective interaction and Communication between health care providers facilitates transmition of information, limits errors in women’s care and increase level of satisfaction regarding care provided. Effective communication remains a key factor in the improvement of interpersonal relationships and subsequently the improvement the quality of patients’ outcome. Improvement effective communication skills of health care providers through training programmes should be implemented regularly to strength the weak points in communication process of health care providers. The aim of this study was to assess communication of health care providers in obstetrics and gynecology wards at Mansoura University Hospital. A descriptive cross sectional study was used. A convenient sample of 106 health care providers who are working in obstetrics and gynecology wards were included in the study. Tools for data collection: Three tools were used to collect the necessary data about the study subjects: Tool (1): Structured interviewing questionnaires: This part was designed by the researcher after reviewing the related literature. ( Alimoradi et al., 2013).It consists of two parts: Part 1: Socio-demographic data of healthcare providers The questionnaires included five questions related to( age, sex, telephone number, address and education level, ect ………) Part 2: Professional characteristics of health care providers Such as (working unit, type of work, years of experiences, working hours, ect……….). Tool (2): Modified Observational Checklist for Assessment of the communication skills. which consisted of 30 items include 23items of verbal communication skills as (greets and shows interest in patient as a person, introduce himself, uses words that show care and concern throughout the interview, ect…..) and 7 items of nonverbal communication skills as,(have neat and tidy personal appearance , sitting in correct position toward patient, listen to woman with patience ,ect…….). Tool (3): Perceived Nurse- Physician communication among nurses and physicians. It consisted of 11 items as (physicians difficulties in understanding what nurses mean and nurse difficulties in understanding what physician mean……ect ). The result of this study can be summarizedas the following: The results of the present study highlighted that 53% of nurses-women total communication skills was relatively poor. 55% of physicians-women total communications skills were relatively fair . Also, 45% of worker-women total communication skills was relatively poor. Moreover, there was a significant association between good communication skills and high level of education ,increased years of experience and older age. Conclusion Based on the study findings, it is concluded that assessment of health care provider’s communication skills in maternity wards is very important to identify gaps of communication process that need to be addressed. The current study concluded that communication skills of health care provides toward women were relatively poor. While, communication skills between health care providers were relatively good. Also there was a statistically significant difference between good total communication scores and health care providers who aged more than thirty-five years, who had long years of experience and who had a higher level of education. As, communication is the core of effective clinical skill in health care system , so communication skills of health care providers in maternity wards at Mansoura University Hospitals needs to be improved to solve communication mishaps in patient care. Recommendations Based on the study findings, the study is recommends the following:- • Different models of teaching communication skills should be designed and executed to among health care providers to establish the best and most effective method of training communicative behaviors in maternity care. • training programs should be implemented regularly to strength the weak points in communication process of health care providers’.
