Abstract

Total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure
in which the diseased parts of the knee joint are replaced
with an artificial prosthesis. The main aim for TKR
surgeries is to relieve the significant disabling pain that not
responded to the conservative measures. Worldwide, TKR
is the most commonly performed joint replacement
surgeries (Scott , 2018).
Aim of the study:
This study aimed to assess the biopsychosocial needs
of patients undergoing total knee replacement through the
following:
1- Assess the physical needs of patients undergoing
total knee replacement.
2- Assess the psychological needs of patients
undergoing total knee replacement.
3- Assess the social needs of patients undergoing total
knee replacement.
Research questions:
1- What are the physical needs of patients undergoing
total knee replacement?

Subjects and methods:
Research design
A descriptive exploratory design was utilized in this study.
Setting
The study was conducted at orthopedic units at Al-
Helal hospital that affiliated to the Ministry of Health.
Subject:
A purposive sample of (70) adult patients who were
admitted to the above mentioned setting. Patients were
selected according to the following inclusion criteria both
sexes, above40 years old, willing to participate and able to
communicate.
Tools of data collection:
Data were collected through using the following tools:-

I- Patient’s interviewing questionnaire tool:-This tool
was developed be the researcher and included two parts:
 First part: included the socio-demographic
characteristics of patient.
 The second part: concerned with patients’ health
history .
II- Western Ontario and McMater
universities (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index
LK3.1: This tool was adapted from (Bellamy, 1988) and
modified by researchers to assess the physical needs for
patients undergoing TKR. It was composed of three
subscales; Pain, Stiffness and Physical function.
III- Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale
(HADS): This tool was adopted from (Zigmond and
Snaith, 1983) to assess psychological needs for patients
undergoing TKR. It was divided into two subscales;
Anxiety and Depression.
IV- Social Dysfunction Rating Scale (SDRS):
This tool was adopted from (McDowell, 2006) to assess
social needs for patients undergoing TKR.
