Abstract

Arabic literature in general and Kuwaiti literature written in English in particular are under-researched in both Western and Kuwaiti academia. Consequently, the Western misperceived views about the worthiness of Kuwaiti literary works and their authors’ intellectuality and societal roles remain unchallenged. Therefore, this dissertation analyzes themes in selected novels and short stories written in English by Kuwaiti authors and set in modern-day Kuwait. The main objective is to figure out if these works reveal socio-cultural flaws to illicit reform, or if they are merely literary products to entertain and to maintain the status quo. The analysis proves that these authors are social reformers who daringly and vividly pinpoint some socio-cultural flaws that are rarely discussed in public, such as sexism, racism, sectarianism, classism among nationals, and discrimination against the ”Other”, like domestic workers and Bidoons.
