Abstract

Innovation is frequently used as a buzzword in the healthcare
sector. Nursing innovation is an essential source of progress in the health care
systems all over the world. The innovative performance of any organization is
based on its’ employees’ innovative work behavior. One of the important
effects of understanding the innovation process and its’ steps is improving
clinical decision-making. The aim was to study the effect of a training
program about innovative competencies on innovative work behavior and
clinical-decision making of nursing interns at Suez Canal University. Subject
and method: Quasi-experimental design (One group pre-test post-test) was
utilized to conduct the study. The sample of the study was all the
internship students in the academic year 2018/2019 who affiliated to Faculty
of Nursing at Suez Canal University and spent their internship period in
Suez Canal University Hospitals during the data collection period. They
were 68 students. Setting: was Suez Canal University Hospitals. Tools: Six
self-administered tools were used. Innovative competencies measured by four
tools, which are Tool (1) Innovative competencies knowledge questionnaire,
Tool (2) problem-solving inventory, Tool (3) quality of idea generated, Tool
(4) champion behavior measure. Innovative work behavior was measured by
Tool (5) which was an innovative work behavior scale. Clinical decisionmaking
was measured by Tool (6) which was the clinical Decision Making in
Nursing Scale. Results: There was a statistically significant positive effect of
the innovative competencies training program on the interns’ innovative
competencies (problem-solving, idea generation and championing), innovative
work behavior and clinical decision-making )P<0.001(. Conclusion: There
was an improvement in innovative competencies, innovative work behavior
and clinical decision making of nursing interns at Suez Canal University after
implementing innovative competencies training program. Recommendations:
Innovation should be included in the internship orientation program. The
nursing students in the fourth year should introduce an innovation project, as a graduation project.
