Abstract

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome ( PCOS), is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. PCOS is not only accompanied with negative physical consequences, but this syndrome also affects psycho-social and sexual well being. Aim: assess sexual and psychological health of women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Design: Descriptive design. Setting: This study was conducted at Gynecologic Clinics of Gynecology and Obstetrics Department at MUH. Subjects: Involved 114 women who attended to the Gynecologic Clinics of Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital at MUH. Sample type: Purposivesampling. Tools: five tools (Structured Interview schedule, Female sexual function index (FSFI), Rosenberg self-esteem scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory). Results: Majority of women ( 94.7%) suffered from mild depression followed by moderate depression (5.3%)., (63.2%) suffered from moderate anxiety followed by severe anxiety (32.5%). There was a highly significant between infertility and metabolic syndrome with total FSFI score (P) = < 0.001). There was statistical significant between presence of infertility & total depression score. (P) = < 0.001).There was statistical significant between presence of metabolic syndrome and total depression score. (P) = < 0.05).There was statistical significant between presence of high levels of masculinizing hormones and total depression score. There was highly statistical significant between presence of menstrual disturbances and total anxiety score.Conclusion: It was concluded that about three quarters of them complained from menstrual disturbances, more than one half of them complained from infertility followed by less than one half of them complained from metabolic syndrome and high levels of masculinizing hormones respectively. Studied women suffered from sexual dysfunction and around two thirds complain from moderate anxiety, and majority have normal selfesteem & mild depression. Recommendation: The study recommended that increase awareness of the women about PCOS signs and symptoms and impact of PCOS on psychological and sexual status.
