Abstract

Violence against women is widely recognized as a serious human right abuse and an important public health problem include different types such as physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse with substantial consequences on women’s health. Domestic violence against women results physical, sexual, mental harm or suffering to women, including threats, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty occurring in public or in private life and may lead to injury, psychological harm, mal development deprivation or death (Semahegn & Mengistie, 2015).Violence against women affects women’s lives and health in each phase of their life in different aspects. The extent of domestic violence against women impact on their physical and mental health, both in the short and long terms, and the wider outcomes of this violence for families, communities and society makes it a public health priority. (Duran & Eraslan, 2019). So, the current study aimed to assess women’s perception regarding domestic violence.
Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to assess women’s perception regarding domestic violence through: 1. Assessing women’s knowledge and attitude toward domestic violence.
2. Assessing women’s reported practice toward domestic violence.
Results:
the important findings that were obtained from the study can be summarized as follow:-
 The study findings indicated that, the mean age of women was 33.4 ± 8.1 year, as well as 80% of them were married, while 50.4% of them resident in rural areas. As regard to educational level of the studied women, it was found that, less than one third (31.3%) of them had secondary education and 18.2% university education. While, about one fifth (20.9%) were illiterate. Regarding occupation, 71.3% of studied women were housewife.
 The study findings revealed that, less than two thirds (62%) of the studied women had poor knowledge regarding domestic violence. While, slightly less than one quarter (23%) of them had good knowledge regarding domestic violence. Also, less than one fifth (15%) of them had fair knowledge regarding domestic violence.
 The study findings represented that, less than two thirds (63%) of the studied women had negative attitude regarding domestic violence. While, more than one third (37%) of them had positive attitude regarding domestic violence.
 The study findings represented that, 53%, 51.4% & 47.8% of the studied women had moderate level of exposure regarding control behaviors, physical violence, psychological violence and sexual violence, respectively. While, 33.9% & 26.9% of them had high level of exposure regarding psychological violence and physical violence, respectively.
 The study results indicated that, slightly less than half (49%) of the studied women had moderate level of exposure to domestic violence. While, less than one third (31%) of them had low level of exposure to domestic violence. And, one fifth (20%) of them had high level of exposure regarding domestic violence as reported practices.
 The study results indicated that, there were highly statistically significant relation between total knowledge of the studied women and their education level, marital status, residence, occupation and monthly income at (P= < 0.01). Also, there were statistically significant relation with age at (P= < 0.05).
 The study findings showed that, there was highly statistically significant relation between total reported practice of the studied women and their age, education level, marital status, residence, occupation and monthly income.
 The study findings revealed that, there was highly significant positive correlation between total knowledge scores among the studied women regarding domestic violence and their total attitude scores.
 The study findings showed that there was highly significant negative correlation between total knowledge scores and total reported practice scores among the studied women regarding domestic violence.
 The study findings showed that there was highly significant negative correlation between total reported practice scores and total attitude scores among the studied women regarding domestic violence.
