Abstract Medication errors especially with high alert medication as oxytocin may lead to fatal complications to the mother as well as to the fetus which may lead to permanent deformity or reach to death. Aim: This study aimed to; Evaluate nurses’ compliance with oxytocin administration protocol during labor. Subjects and Method: A descriptive design was adopted. Setting: the study was conducted at Obstetrics and Gynecology department in four hospitals named: Altakhasosy Hospital, Al Azhar Hospital, General Damietta Hospital, and KafrSaad Hospital in Damietta city. Sample: A total of fifty-five (55) nurses working in the previously mentioned hospitals and (165) pregnant women in previous mentioned setting were recruited in the study. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection: 1-Structured Self -administered questionnaire, 2- an observational checklist and 3- assessment sheet. Results: itrevealed that: about two-third of nurses had poor knowledge about the use of oxytocin administration protocol, and there was a statistically significant relationship between the average total knowledge score of studied nurses and their working shift, years of experience in nursing. The majority of them had unsatisfactory practice levels, and there was no statistically significant relationship between theaverage total practice score of studied nurses and their demographic characteristics. Conclusion: the nurses had poor knowledge about the use of oxytocin, and most of them had unsatisfactory practice. Recommendations: periodicin-services training programs on oxytocin administration to improve nurses knowledge and practice is needed, further studies to identify factors responsible for the low quality of nursing care during childbirth to any complication also needed. |
