Abstract Al Rahawy drain is one of the main sources of pollution on the River Nile, while it receives untreated waste water of some villages located along it, in addition to the agricultural drainage water. The objectives of this reaserch are assessing the current water quality of Al Rahawy drain and simulating various water quality management scenarios for the drain by construction waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) for those villages by using QUAL2K which is a river and stream water quality model recommended by The United States Environmental Production Agency (U. S. EPA). To achieve the objectives, some water samples were collected along Al Rahawy drain from different locations. The field measurements carried out at each location included the water quality in-situ measurements during the period of summer 2017, and winter 2018. The collected water samples were analyzed according to Standard Method for The Examination of Water and Waste Water, AWWA, (1999) for DO, BOD, COD, and TSS. Six scenarios were applied to simulate DO, BOD, COD, and TSS during summer 2017 and winter 2018 according to the treatment of some villages that located on Al Rahawy Drain. The results showed that the QUAL2K model is successfully applied for simulating the water quantity and quality parameters of Al Rahawy drain. Moreover treatment of some villages will lead to decrease the BOD, COD, and TSS to be 32.13, 86.6, 64.45 mg/l respectively. On the other hand increasing of DO to be 4.52 mg/l it is mean that the water quality of Al Rahawy drain will be near to the acceptable values of Law 92/2013. |
