The interest in the rurals and rural development has begun to take its place in the development process in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Likewise, the issue of the development of Saudi villages and their improvement has become one of the main pillars in setting a comprehensive development strategy in the Kingdom.This master’s thesis has addressed the study of urban villages in Al-Kharj Governorate, Al-Riyadh region, Saudi Arabia, using the Geographical Information Systems GIS, and focusing on the following:This study was concerned about identifying the urban areas most affected by urbanization, and explaining the structural hierarchy of them.The thesis compared between the natural and human geographical characteristics of the study area in terms of influencing urban villages. It was found that the influence of human characteristics outweighs the importance more than natural factors and its characteristics.This study highlights the effect of the demographic criteria and the economic activities on the features of urbanization. It was illustrated that there is a direct prpoportional relationship between the population size and the functional weight of the urbanized villages.It has also explained the importance of the planning standards and their relative weights, and their important role in classifying urban villages in the area of study.This study emphasized the reflection of the importance of the location of villages and their spatial relationships on their importance in terms of the characteristics of urbanization. The increase in the value of the portal and the focal sites shows an increase in the value of the urban village. The master’s thesis analyzed the impact of urbanization factors changing the morphology of villages on the forms and plans of urbanizing villages.The thesis concerned with explaining the role of land uses for the villages being urbanized, due to the diverse and multiple usage of the land in these villages rather than the single use.Finally, a proposed spatial model was elaborated for the suitabilities of services in urbanizing villages, using the Geographical Information Systems GIS, (choosing the most appropriate location for an industrial secondary school in the village of Al-Rafaie).
