Abstract

Psychiatric illness is increased and becoming a major public health problem, the care of these people falls fundamentally in the hands of relatives, thus, caregivers are at potential risk for burden when they are obliged to take responsibility for the overall care of the patient and exhibit submissive behaviors which are one of the most effective coping methods, and the submissive behaviors may mediate the effect on future depression. Aim: This study aimed to explore the relation between the burden of care giving, submissive behaviors, and depressive symptoms among caregivers of psychiatric patients. Subjects and Method: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. The study subjects consisted of 148 caregivers of patients’ relatives at the time of the visit from the inpatient department and also from the outpatient clinics in Port-Said Psychiatric Health Hospital. Three structured interviews were utilized to collect the necessary data. TOOL I: Zairt Care Giver Burden Scale, TOOL II: The Submissive Behavior Scale, Tool III: An Arabic Version of Beck Depression Inventory, in addition to, personal and clinical data questionnaire. Results: The study revealed that, a majority of the caregivers of psychiatric patients had a severe level of burden, more than half of them had a high level of submissive behavior, and almost all of them had a severe level of depression. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the total score of burden, the total score of submissive behavior, and the total score of depression. Recommended: The study recommended that developing skills to regulate the caregivers’ burden of care giving, submissive behaviors, and depression as a part of their health promotion and education practices in clinical areas or community settings, and advise them to participate in physical and leisure activities to minimize the effect of burden.
