Abstract Background: The word epilepsy is derived from Greek words meaning “to seize upon” or a “taking hold of.” Our predecessors referred to it as the “falling sickness” or the “falling evil.” Objective: To evaluate the depression like symptoms in patients with epilepsy on medical treatment . Further, the comparison between newer and older AEDs was done to evaluate the difference, if any, in terms of occurrence of depression between different drugs and other factors. Patients and Methods: Type of Study: cross-sectional observational study. Study Setting: Study is expected to be performed in Ain Shams university hospital, and MISR University for Science and Technology Teaching Hospital. Study Period: December 2019 – August 2020. Study Population: 360 patients diagnosed with epilepsy on different types and regimes of ADEs Results: This may attributed to lack of the studies that identified the risk factors of developing depression in patients with epilepsy –which this study dealing with- and focusing on the depression and other psychiatrics and behavioral manifestations as an part of pre, inter or ictal phenomena. Conclusion: There is well confirmed bi-directional relationship between depression and epilepsy this study deal with risk factor of developing depression among patients with epilepsy on medical treatment. Using NDDI-E score for assessment of depression among 360 patients with cut off 15 point to diagnose the depression show that Young age, generalized seizures, newer AEDs –especially levitracetam-, increased numbers of AEDs and poor seizures control are risk factor of developing depression among patients with epilepsy on medical treatment while gender did not show a relation to it. |
