Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the major cause of global burden of disease and will continue to do so for many years to come. While great progress has been made in understanding the etiology, treatment, and prevention of the diseases at both the individual and community level, future initiatives in population-wide prevention strategies and reducing social disadvantage for both developed and developing countries remain at the forefront of combating the epidemic of cardiovascular diseases. CVD is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with the lifetime risk exceeding 60%. Atherosclerosis is globally the leading cause of death and disability with the bulk of disease in the developing world, since it is estimated that more than 80 % of all mortality due to CVD occurs in developing countries.
Atherosclerosis is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease in the medium and large arteries characterized by lipid-containing inflammatory lesions which is a progressive process.
MSCs are considered as effective therapeutic cells in transplantation due to their immunomodulatory activities. These multi-potent stem cells have self-renewal ability and are capable of migrating and engrafting at the sites of inflammation. Furthermore, MSCs modulate most cells of the innate and adaptive immunities such as B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocyte, Natural Killer cells and antigen-presenting cells by direct contact or by secretion of different chemokines, cytokines and growth factors.
Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the effect of the therapeutic effects of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells injection in hyperlipidemia induced aortic atherosclerosis in adult male albino rats.
