Abstract

The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study in Assiut - Egypt. Samples were collected from the Women’s Health Hospital (WHH), the Department of Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine (CONM) and South Egypt Cancer Institute (SECI) at Assiut University, Assiut Governorate, Egypt during the period from January 2015 to November2016.
The study included 194 cases as following:
- Eighty-eight cases of vaginal yeast infection of which 41 were immunocompromised patients (ICPs), and 47 were non-immunocompromised (non-ICPs) serving as control group, and 106 cases of oral yeast infections including 88 ICPs used chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy for cancer treatment and 18 of non-ICPs as control.
- The current study was designed to determine the common yeast strains causing vaginal and oral yeast infections for ICPs and compare them with the strains from non-ICPs in terms of rate of infection and the incidence of NCA as well as assessment of multidrug resistant strains against different antifungal agents. The study also investigated the ability of yeast strains to produce protease and lipase as a virulence factors, the capacity of C. dubliniensis to produce nanoparticles, and the effect of these nanoparticles on different strains.
- Samples collected using sterile cotton swabs by specialized physicians and promptly sent to the Assiut University Mycological Centre, for diagnosis, isolation and identification purposes. The yeast infection of the samples was monitored using direct microscopic examination after Gram stain and LPCB stain, and by cultivation on SDA and HiCrome agar.
