Abstract The present study provides a particular characterization of the floristic, ecological, biochemicaland molecularfeatures of three selected species namely: Onopordum alexandrinum, Silybum marianumvar. albiflorumand Silybum marianumvar. marianum growing naturally in the Deltaicand MareotisMediterranean coastal regionsin Egypt.Also shed light on the economic importance of these plants by examining the chemical composition of them as well as examine some of the biological activities such as allelopathyandantioxidant activities.The present study aims at the following objectives:Characterization of the habitat types of the selected species of family Asteraceae, characterization of the floristic features including: list of species, distribution, lifespan, life-form spectra and chorological affinities of the plant species in the study areas to reveal the taxonomic and phytogeographical importance of its floristic components. The total number of the recorded plant species surveyed in the present study was154 species belonging to 118 genera and related to 39 families. The family Asteraceae comprises 34 species (22.08%) of the total number of recorded plant species, followed by family Poaceae 17 species (11.04%), Chenopodiaceae 14 species (9.09%), Fabaceae 13 species (8.044%), Brassicaceae 10 species (6.49%), Apiaceae and solanaceae 6 species for each (3.80%), Polygonaceae 5 species (3.25%), Caryophyllaceae and Lamiaceae 4 species (2.50%), Boraginaceae, Convolvulaceae and Plantaginaceae 3 species (1.95%), Aizoaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Frankeniaceae, Malvaceae, Tamaricaceae and Zygophyllaceae 2 species (1.20%), while the remaining families which include: Amaranthaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Aspergaceae, Asphodelaceae, Cistaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Cyperaceae, Geraniaceae, Orobanchaceae, Oxalidaceae, Papaveraceae, Peganaceae, Primulaceae, Plumbaginaceae, Portulacaceae, Resedaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Thymelaceae, Urticaceae and Verbenaceae 20 species (12.99%) collectively. |
