Abstract

Background and Objective; Burns have major impact on society with great morbidity and mortality. Burn evaluation is done mainly in two aspects, to determine, the depth and total percent surface area injured (TBSA %). Silver has been widely used for many years in wound care to help in management of local infection. Dressings containing ionic silver have been designed to meet the required antimicrobial properties with prolonged release of silver during wear-time, and accelerate healing time.
Aim of the Work; The aim of the present study was to compare between Silver containing dressings (Aquacel, Acticoat) and Silver Sulfadiazine cream in management of superficial partial thickness burns according to time to complete wound healing, the number of dressing changes, the pain score both during and after the wound dressing procedures, the incidence of infection, and the total cost effectiveness.
Methods; The study was conducted on 20 patients of both sex and different ages who had Superficial partial thickness burns less than 20% TBSA of the trunk and extremities. Half the patients (10 patients) were dressed by silver containing dressings (Aquacel Ag or Acticoat), while the other half was dressed by sulfadiazine
Results; we have found that the wound healing process have improved much in group of Silver dressings, and patients of this group had less number of dressing changes. The patients in Silver containing dressings group had lower pain scores during and after dressing procedures. Also, silver dressings (Aquacel and Acticoat) are considered to be more cost effective than Silver sulfadiazine cream.
Conclusion; that patients’ satisfaction and lower susceptibility to complications in the silver containing dressings group (Acticoat or Aquacel Ag) than in the conventional group which received the usual wound care with silver Sulfadiazine cream, have reflected the positive impact of silver dressings on the wound healing process.
