Abstract Ferrocement is a composite material in which the inherent properties of two constituent materials are best made use of. The filler material-cement sand mortar call matrix-is reinforced with layers of reinforcing mesh in both the principal directions. The subdivision and distribution of ductile material (wire mesh) throughout the matrix increases the elasticity of it. Bricks exhibits very good results against axial compressive loads. A total of Ten ferrocement light brick walls were produced in the experimental program. The considered parameters in the present investigation are: type and number of reinforcing steels meshes in each ferrocement layer. The results of this study are also presented and discussed. This thesis aims at construction of parapets by ferrocement Achieving low cost, easy to cast, light weight, and environmentally friendly walls would have economic and ecological merits. To accomplish this objective, an experimental program was conducted. The experimental program comprised casting and testing of ten reinforced walls were cast and cured for 28-days before testing, The dimensions of all test specimens were kept constant of dimensions 120x620x660mm. After complete hardening of concrete, 28 days, the specimens were taken out of the curing room and left to dry for 24 hours. After drying, the specimens were painted with white paint to ease the process of tracking the cracks upon testing. These walls are organized in two groups, group number one is about five specimens were supported with Welded Wire Mesh while group number two is about five specimens were supported with Expanded Wire Mesh which in all ten specimens are reinforced with one layer or two layers on one or two faces of the wall. All test specimens were tested vertically on the movable table in the compression testing machine. The load was applied in increments of 2 ton, All the deformation characteristics, cracking patterns and strengths were extensively measured at all stage of loadings. The experimental results showed that high ultimate and serviceability loads, better crack resistance control especially, the walls which reinforced with expanded wire mesh. The experimental, theoretical and finite element results verified the viability of using the ferrocement parapets as an alternative to the traditional reinforced concrete parapets. |
