Abstract Thyroid cancer is the most common malignancy of endocrine glands. The commonest type of thyroid carcinomas is papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Most patients with PTC are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally on routine examination and US studies for other causes. Aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bilateral central lymph nodes dissection when added to total thyroidectomy in patients with PTC on recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and hypoparathyroidism. This prospective study illustrated the effect of central lymph nodes dissection when added to total thyroidectomy for 12 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma on short term outcome. There is a debate on prophylactic removal of the central group of lymph nodes at time of thyroidectomy in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. Some investigators prefer to avoid it due to its associated increased rates of postoperative hypoparathyroidism and vocal cords affection.Other researchers prefer to do it to avoid recurrence, help properstaging because of the fact that papillary thyroid carcinoma is known to have a high predilection to spread to the central group of lymph nodes. Regarding demographic data of the studied cases, most of the studied cases (83.3%) were females. 50% of patients in the study werein the age between 30 and 40 years. |
