Abstract

This study describes the cemetery of the royal family since its inception until now and the turning of this magnificent edifice into an open museum for those interested in Islamic monuments. It describes one of the most important Islamic monuments throughout history. It includes incalligraphieions in the ancient Ottoman language and a unique calligraphie type which is the Nasta’liq that is a composite form of the Naskh line Ta’liq calligraphies. It shows the clear influence of the Ottoman civilization, as this calligraphie was found on many monuments of the Ottoman Empire. These unique incalligraphieions record the development of the history of Egypt under Muhammad Ali. They also show the development of calligraphy also in terms of its creation until the stage of prosperity. These incalligraphieions show also the history of wars and achievements of some personalities of the prominent family during the reign of Muhammad Ali’s dynasty.
It also includes jobs and the political, economic, and social status of these personalities such as Tusun Pasha, Ibrahim Pasha and Ismail Pasha the sons of Muhammad Ali; Abbas Helmy I, the first grandson to rule Egypt of Muhammad Ali’s dynasty. This manifests the extent of the calligraphers’ interest of the era in the incalligraphieions. This Turkish influence appears on the tombstones and the type of calligraphie that was not used before in Egypt. This calligraphie developed and reached its zenith during the reign of Muhammad Ali’s dynasty. In addition, All tombstones of men were numerated and described archaeologically. The content of these tombstones deals with their forms, the calligraphie in which incalligraphieions were executed, their duration, the method of implementation, the calligrapher who executed them, and other information.
This is followed by an analysis of the content of the incalligraphieions in Hosh al-Basha by examining each tombstone separately to develop a concept for the then political and social life. This will provide some useful information on some positions of ambiguity and difference about the antiquities, besides knowing the type of calligraphie and the calligrapher that carried out it on the tombstone. Moreover, it also dealt with the titles mentioned in the incalligraphieions which showed the diversity of titles and their development during the reign of Muhammad Ali.
In addition, the study dealt with how to benefit from the cemetery in increasing the tourist attraction and putting Islamic monuments on the tourist map in Egypt and how the tourist guides can use the incalligraphieions in the field of guidance.
The study was concluded with the most important results and developed some recommendations on the best use for the Islamic monuments in general and those of Hosh al-Basha cemetery in particular. This is followed by mentioning the sources, references, scientific thesis and orientalist writings that helped in preparing this study and its accomplishment. Tables numerating those monumental incalligraphieions were also attached this study. They numerated the tombs of men descending from Muhammad Ali’s dynasty and buried in Hosh Al-Basha to facilitate handling these incalligraphieions and their comparisons. The researcher prepared an album of men’s sarcophagi to help those unable to visit the investigated monuments at Hosh al-Basha.
