Abstract

This study was conducted at Mansoura University Hospitals aiming to assess the role of pelvic MRI and perineal US in the assessment of postoperative patients with congenital anorectal malformations. We included a total of 15 cases with anorectal malformations. All cases were subjected to complete history taking, physical examination, perineal ultrasonography, and MRI. The mean age of the included cases was 36.2 months (range, 7 – 108 months). We included 9 males (60%) and 6 females (40%). Regarding muscle development in the study cases, 5 cases had good development, while another 5 cases had fair development. Three cases had poor development, whereas no muscles were detected in the remaining 2 cases. In the 13 cases with pelvic muscle development, the mean thickness of both right and left external sphincter was 2.55 and 2.94 mm respectively. In addition, the mean thickness of levator ani muscle was 1.61 and 1.6 mm on the right and left sides respectively. Anorectal angle had a mean value of 117.8. Regarding pelvic floor symmetry, it was symmetrical in 11 cases while the remaining cases were asymmetrical. Sphincter muscle was irregular in 7 cases while 8 cases had regular outline. Rectum had central position in 11 cases, while fat tissue interposition was detected in 6 cases. Perineal ultrasound was done and results were compared to previously illustrated data by MRI imaging, we found that it is not efficient and has no value in evaluating post-operative cases with anorectal malformation.
