Abstract

Statement of problem : Overdenture attachment design and retentive inserts may significantly influence stress/strain magnitude around implants. Aim of study : The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the effect of the different heights of Locator attachment and retentive inserts on the stresses around implant retained mandibular overdenture. Material and Methods: This study was carried out on clear acrylic resin model representing mandibular completely edentulous arch with Two dummy implants were inserted bilaterally in canine region in each model using consecutive drilling procedure. Then the ridge was covered by auto-polymerzied soft liner material. Locator abutments were secured to dummy implants. Each model was duplicated with dental stone and three overdentures were prepared. According to the Locator abutment height, the casts are classified into three groups. group I : Locator abutment height is 1mm. group II: Locator abutment height is 2mm. group III : Locator abutment height is 3mm, each groups were used with different retentive insert. Each implant received four strain gauges to measure the axial strain around the implants by using universal testing machine. Data was collected and statistically analyzed. Result: Bilateral loaded gives the highest values with blue, orange and clear insert in 3mm height. While in unilateral loaded, 3 mm height gives the highest stress value around the implants and least values were with 2mm height followed by 1mm height with blue and clear only. Conclusion : Within the limitation of this in vitro study the stresses increase when height and retention of nylon insert increase.
