Abstract

Fractures of phalanges are probably the most common fractures in the skeletal system, often neglected as minor injuries and treated conservatively. Different sorts of fixation are often indicated in unstable fractures, each with its own merits. The ideal technique should regain proximal interphalangeal joint congruency, and allow early range of motion. There are many different fixation modalities, ranges from extension block splinting, closed reduction and percutaneous fixation, open reduction and internal fixation, volar plate arthroplasty and dynamic external fixation. This study was intended to evaluate clinical, functional and radiological outcomes of external dynamic fixation of fractures of proximal interphalangeal joints of the hand. This was a prospective study with follow up period of an average period of 24 weeks. Twenty one patients included in this study were managed with external dynamic fixation, however only twenty patients completed the follow up period. Those patients were managed and followed up at Tanta university Hospital in the period from June 2018 to March 2019. The age of those patients ranged from 16 to 63 years old. There were15 males and 6 females. The dominant hand was affected in 6 patients while the non-dominant side was affected in 15 patients. The PIPJ of the ring finger was the most frequently fractured one (10 patients), the middle finger in 6 patients, the little in 5 patients.
