Abstract

Many reinforced concrete multistory buildings are designed and constructed with the center of mass (C.M) and center of rigidity (C.R) does not coincide. Consequently, eccentricities and torsion are generated in these buildings and the structure is so-called torsionally asymmetric ( with horizontal irregularity ).Concrete with high compressive strength was necessary in many locations. The main advantage of using High-Strength Concrete (HSC) is the cost saving from the use of smaller volumes of concrete.Research scope: - When torsionally asymmetric reinforced concrete multistory buildings are subjected to seismic loads, additional torsional moments take place as a result of the interaction between the applied lateral loads and resistant forces. These torsional moments cause greater damage in these reinforced concrete buildings as demonstrated by many real earthquakes and with the commercial availability of HSC with compressive strength approaching 140 MPa, it has become necessary to study the seismic behavior of torsionally asymmetric buildings constructed with HSC Research objectives: - The main objectives of this thesis are: 1- Studying the seismic behavior of torsionally asymmetric multistory 3-D buildings constructed from NSC with characteristic cylinder compressive strength fc’= 25 MPa and from HSC up to fc’ =100 MPa. 2-Verifying the Static Equivalent Lateral Force (SELF) methods adopted by the international seismic codes ( EC-8, ASCE/SEI 7-16 and ECL-2012) when applied to torsionally asymmetric NSC and HSC multistory 3-D buildings. 3- Checking the criteria provided by the international seismic codes to distinguish torsionally irregular from torsionally regular 3-D multistory buildings. Steps of Study: -In order to study the nonlinear seismic behavior of torsionally asymmetric reinforced concrete 3-D multistory buildings constructed from(NSC) with characteristic cylinder compressive strength fc` = 25 MPa and from (HSC) up to fc` = 100 MPa, The inelastic dynamic analysis computer program (ETABS-17) has been used to solve the nonlinear equations of motions for two examples of torsionally symmetric and torsionally asymmetricmultistory buildings (12-stories) with different structural eccentricity e in building plan with length L ( e is calculated according to ECL-2012 in the form of e/L ratio equal to 0.0, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20) under 2 selected earthquake time histories.
