Abstract

Amis of the study :
The study is going to explore how far the Alexandrian statues reflected the interaction between such works of art and their contemporary community and its everyday life activities. Do they express real examples of daily life or they are just artistic molds irrelevant of actual life?
The study is intended to display examples of Alexandrian statues that represent the various sectors and classes of the Alexandrian society, such as Alexandrian citizens, the Macedonian troops, the ordinary Greeks (non-citizens), the native Egyptians and other ethnics. It is also intended to show examples of various professions and crafts such as soldiers, knights, workers of handy crafts, servants, slaves… etc.
The sculptors of Hellenistic Alexandria depicted statues of the highest class in the society such as kings, queens, rulers, heroes and elite personalities. In all the cases, the mainstream of the study is an academic attempt to detect the realistic attitude of the artist (sculptor) in his depiction.
The importance of the study:
Since this thesis is not a traditional archaeological study of Alexandrian sculpture - the point of research here is closely interwoven with and deeply- rooted in Hellenistic Alexandrian society with all its components whether political, social or cultural. Consequently this thesis will mingle the literary and documentary evidence of that society, and explore how far the available chosen examples of Alexandrian statues reflected such an environment of Ptolemaic literary, historical and archaeological evidence that are going to be linked together to be fully and deeply interpreted to construct a comprehensive image of the topic.
Thus, the literary material is displayed, analysed and constructed to compose a comprehensive image of the Alexandrian society under the Ptolemies. The second step is to expose the archaeological material chosen for the purpose of the study in order to examine the degree of realism in them on the basis of the literary and documentary background.
