Abstract The Portland Cement industry causes approximately 7% of global greenhouse gas production. The reduction of CO2 emissions can be done by using geopolymer cement. Geopolymer cement is alkali- activated slag composites which can be considered as a green construction material. The thesis presents preparation of alkali- activated slag (geopolymer cement) by mixing various amounts of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate as a ratio by weight with ground granulated blast furnace slag. The effect of hydration on physico chemical and mechanical properties of AAS pastes such as bulk density, compressive strength, total porosity, combined water and also XRD analysis at different time period 7, 28 and 90 days in water are studied. The test parameters include curing types (Water curing at room temperature and sodium hydroxide content (4%, 6% and 8%) with sodium silicate (5%, 10% and 15%) of the mass of blast furnace slag alternately). It has been found that alkali content have significant effects on the physical and mechanical properties of hydrated GGBFS. The results showed increase in compressive strength, combined water and bulk density and decrease in total porosity up to 90 days. Keywords: |
