Abstract

SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by an aberrant autoimmune response to self-antigens that can affect any organ and tissue. CXCL12 (SDF-1α) is one of the most studied chemokine, which originally described as a secreted product of bone marrow stromal cell line. It is one of the biomarkers that was found in some autoimmune diseases including SLE. The aim of our study was to assess serum level of CXCL12 in patients with SLE and to study its relation to clinical and laboratory features of the disease. The present study was conducted on 80 subjects : 40 SLE patients who were recruited from the outpatient clinic of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation department at Mansoura University Hospital and 40 healthy subjects of matching age and sex. serum CXCL12 were done to all participants. The data obtained from our study showed that serum levels of CXCL12 were significantly higher in SLE patients compared to control group (p=0.004). Also there was significant correlation between low serum CXCL12 and Alopecia in SLE patients (p=0.021). there was significant correlation between serum CXCL12 and ANA (p=0.007), Platelet count (p=0.020) and serum creatinine (p=0.014). CXCL12 presents in higher levels in serum of SLE patients compared to healthy controls, so it is a possible risk factor for SLE development.
