Abstract

Nutrition plays an important role in preserving skin and tissue viability for prevention of decubitus ulcer. The aim of the current study was to examine the effect of nutritional support on prevention of decubitus ulcers Subjects and method:The current study was conducted in inpatient orthopaedic department of Menoufyia University Hospitals, Egypt in a period from September 2016 to March 2017. One hundered patients were included in the current study.Patients were divided into two equal groups; 50 for each group: Study group(I) had been received special nutritional support. Control group (II) had been received ordinary hospital diet.Tools of the study:
Three tools were utilized for data collection:1- Tool I: Nutritional assessment tool: It was developed by investigator to assess nutritional status of patients and it includes sociodemographics, anthropometric measures, laboratory investigations, physical signs of malnutrition, dietary recall and gastrointestinal tolerance 2- Tool II: Decubitus ulcer: Braden Scale for predicting decubitus ulcer: This scale was originally designed and employed by Braden and Bergstrom (1987) and revised in (Berman et al., 2008). The purpose of the scale is to help health professionals, especially nurses, to assess a patient’s risk for developing a pressure ulcer.3- Tool III: Decubitus ulcer: Skin assessment observational checklist tool:This tool was used to assess patient’s skin for occurrence of decubitus ulcers and healing process if it occurs.7- The main findings of current study were:- There were statistically significant and clinically relevant reduction in the incidence, less hospital stay and better healing of decubitus ulcers in the study group than control group..Based on the findings of the current study recommended that: A) Recommendations for the patients: 1 - Assessment of nutritional status and nutrition therapy should be part of the overall management of immobilized patients and must be routinely entered in the patient’s medical record and nursing notes, and regularly updated. C) Recommendations for future researches:1 - Replication of the study using a larger probability sample from different geographical areas to attain more generalized results.2 - Developing further researches about the relationship between nutritional support and presence of decubitus ulcer complications.
