Abstract

Introduction: Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is the leading cause of lateral elbow pain. It is a commonly seen problem in general practice clinics and has been reported to affect 1% to 3% of adults every year. It is characterized by pain and tenderness over the lateral epicondyle of the humerous and pain on resisted dorsiflexion and radial deviation of the wrist. The diagnosis of epicondylitis depends on a careful history and physical examination. In the majority of patients, the condition is managed conservatively with stopping the offending activity, using ice, administration of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or a corticosteroid injection, and using splint or brace. Platelet-rich plasma contains more concentrated amounts of platelets when compared with whole blood. The platelets have powerful growth factors. PRP has shown to be a general stimulator for repair or regeneration. The aim of work: To determine the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma injections in patients with lateral epicondylitis and to compare between PRP injection and traditional measures.Research plan: The study populations were divided into two groups:•1st group: 20 patients with tennis elbow were treated by PRP injections.•2nd group: 20 patients with tennis elbow were treated by the traditional conservative measures of treatment including rest, bracing and physiotherapy (ultrasound, massage and exercise program). All patients were subjected to clinical examination and assessment on 3 visits: first visit then second visit after 4 weeks of treatment then third visit after 8 weeks of treatment. Results: Our study revealed that local injection of PRP provided statistically significance relief of pain and improvement in treatment of lateral epicondylitis. There was no statistically significant difference between PRP and traditional measures in short term of follow up.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that local injection of PRP, which is novel line of treatment, considers an effective line of treatment of tennis elbow. It provides safe and low cost option for patients who are considered for surgical intervention.
