Abstract

Medium density polyethylene was filled with four different types of oils (chamomile, mustard, soy and almond) with weight percentages: 5, 10, 15 and 20%. Wear and friction were studied using pin-on-disc at loads: 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 N. The best PE-oil composite achieved the lowest wear was filled with four weight percentages of talc and tested. The hardness test was conducted on all composites.
The results’ general trend showed an improvement in wear resistance in presence of oils. 15 wt. % of almond oil achieved the best wear resistance. Friction increased with increasing oil content except mustard oil.
The addition of talc reduced wear and friction compared to unfilled polyethylene.
Enhancing composite of polyethylene – 15 wt. % of almond oil with talc contributed to reduce the friction while wear increased.
Polyethylene hardness slightly increased with increase of talc content while it decreased in the presence of oils.
