Abstract

Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients. The term malnutrition covers 2 broad groups of conditions. One is ‘under nutrition’—which includes stunting, wasting, underweight and micronutrient deficiencies or insufficiencies (a lack of important vitamins and minerals). The other is overweight, obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer).
In developing countries, 52.0% and 34.0–62.0% of the school-age children are stunted and underweight, respectively. According to the World Health Organization, malnutrition is the biggest contributor to child mortality, present in half of all cases Six million children die of hunger every year.
Many factors can cause malnutrition, inadequate food intake, infections, psychosocial deprivation, and insanitary environment as well as lack of hygiene, social inequality, and possibly some genetic contribution. Reports from different organizations like the World Bank documented that children who live in households lacking access to sufficient clean healthy food are more likely to be predisposed to poor nutrition and health related problems than children from food secure households.
The aim of the study is to detect children who have malnutrition at Beni-Suef university hospital and refer them to pediatric nutrition clinic to put plan to proper prevention and management
It was a cross sectional observational study that was carried on 500 children between two to twelve years old in which estimating overweight, obesity, underweight, stunting and wasting using international growth curves and collecting socioeconomic data from parents after approval of internal ethical committee were done.
The main results of the study revealed that:
• Mean weight 21.5±2.8 with range of (10-35) kg, mean height 115.7±22.9 with range of (55-160) cm.
• 51% of cases were average weight for age, 32% were under weight and 17% were overweight.
• There is high significant relation between nutritional status and socioeconomic status.
• Wasting was in 8% of cases, stunting 14% of cases and 32% of cases were underweight, based on results we recommend for Longitudinal and qualitative research shall be done on quantity and quality of nutrients and on the feeding habits of the community.
