Abstract

The common belief to adopt the sustainable approach in development has become clear since 1970. However, during the last decade, there is a tendency to know how these societies can be more sustainable and there is an increasing interest in understanding the relationship between the human activities and the environment’s natural resources. Human beings are living in complicated systems consuming massive amounts of natural resources and simultaneously producing massive amounts of waste.
The rapid consumption of natural resources and the negative impacts of carbon emissions resulting from human settlements promote developing new concepts and techniques for the future cities which respect nature through eliminating the ecological impact. The growing population increases the importance of evaluating the population relationship to cities with an ecological system supporting the environmental life. Thus, there has been more awareness regarding the human resources consumption limit and waste production. In addition, many different ways appeared to measure the society impact on ecology and evaluate this impact on the environmental resources. One of these ways is analyzing the ecological footprint as it enables us to measure the ecological impact and it gives an index to the limit exceeded by the human consumption of the available resources on earth.
There are various factors that make the ecological footprint analysis a valuable tool to analyze sustainability as listed below:
• The ecological footprint is based on the life cycle principle which is a main condition to ecologically evaluate the sustainable development.
• This technique focuses on the consumption as one of the main characteristics of the ecological problems related to non-sustainable consumption patterns.
• It is considered a good way to demonstrate the sustainable development challenges.
• It identifies the critical issues related to calculating and analyzing the ecological footprint and the procedures that can be followed to solve them.
• It analyzes the ecological footprint elements to easily identify the necessary steps that should be taken to promote the environment and sustainability.
