Abstract Time period is the most important dynamic property which affects the dynamic response of buildings to dynamic loads resulting from ground motion during earthquakes. All of the building codes provide mathematical formulas based on regression analysis to estimate the value of fundamental time period. The formulas proposed by building codes are inadequate. This research targets to propose mathematical formulas for estimating the fundamental time period of shear wall (SW) buildings and consequently the dynamic response becomes more authentic and structural designs become more economic. One hundred and forty-two (142) buildings with shear walls similar to those existing in Egypt were prepared and designed according to Egyptian Code for Design and Construction of Concrete Structures; ECP203 (Egyptian Code Committee, 2007). Buildings were divided into three categories (groups), the first group concerning with square buildings (52 square buildings), the second concerning with rectangular buildings (36 rectangular buildings) and the third concerning with general buildings (54 general buildings). The studied buildings were chosen with high variety of parameters values which are affecting time period such as (building height, concrete compressive strength, lateral stiffness, etc.). |
