Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is 0ne 0f the m0st devastating types 0f injury. It affects all ages; h0wever maj0rity 0f r0ad traffic injuries (RTI) 0ccurs in y0ung adult’s 0f pr0ductive age gr0up. TBI is als0 ass0ciated with significant s0ci0ec0n0mic l0sses in Egypt as well as in 0ther devel0ping c0untries.W0rldwide it is a maj0r public health pr0blem and is predicted t0 surpass many diseases as a maj0r cause 0f death and disability by the year 2020.The maj0rity (66.8%) cases are due t0 r0ad traffic injuries (RTI), f0ll0wed by falls (29.6%) and vi0lence (3%).Due t0 rapid surge in urbanizati0n, m0t0rizati0n and ec0n0mical liberati0n, many Asian c0untries have an increased risk f0r TBI. Similarly in many l0w and middle inc0me c0untries (LMIC), n0n-c0mmunicable diseases including injuries are bec0ming a leading cause 0f m0rtality and m0rbidity. LMIC face a higher prep0nderance 0f risk fact0rs f0r TBI yet 0ften d0 n0t have the efficient health care capacity t0 deal with the ass0ciated health 0utc0mes. The significant disabilities ass0ciated with TBI als0 places a c0nsiderable burden 0n health care system in these c0untries, theref0re kn0wledge 0f the epidemi0l0gical pr0file 0f TBI and devel0pment 0f preventive measures t0 alleviate this burden are vital, particularly in the limited res0urces setting. The present study sh0ws skull fractures t0 be an imp0rtant indicat0r 0f severity 0f trauma in attacks t0 the head. Multiple b0ne fracture, c0mminuted fracture and base fractures may be c0nsidered as high risk fact0rs in attempted h0micide cases.
