Abstract

The movements of the fetus are unique for every fetus also the mother’s experiences of these movements .The frequency of movement’s increases from 24 week of pregnancy until 32 week. Women’s ability to perceive fetal movements is affected by factors such as gestational age, parity, obesity and the localization of the placenta .The greatest frequency of fetal movements is experienced when the women are lying down and a majority of women perceive most movements in late evening. Aim of this study: evaluate maternal rest in the left lateral position and its effects on fetal movements. Methods: Design: Randomized controlled trial study design .Setting: study was conducted at Obstetrics and Gynecology department at Mansoura University Hospitals. Subject: purposive sample technique of 120 pregnant women divided into two groups: intervention group; counted fetal movement while lying on left lateral position and control group; counted fetal movement in other position than left lateral position. Tools: two tools were used for data collection includes Socio-demographic data questionnaire and Fetal movement count record. Results: The study findings revealed that fetal movement count in left lateral position is higher in the intervention group than the control group. Conclusion: Pregnant women with reduced fetal movements who rest in left lateral position for two hours or more improved in count of fetal movement rather than those who did not use this position. Recommendation: Educational programs must be conducted in pregnancy to increase pregnant women’s awareness regarding counting fetal movement to be oriented by their fetal wellbeing.
