Abstract

Objective: This study was designed to assess the durability of repair bond strength of two repair systems to zirconia and a glass ceramic.
Materials and Methods: The materials tested were IPS e.max CAD and inCoris ZI mono L zirconia. They were cut into slices of 2mm thickness. A total of 28 all ceramic block samples (n=28) were constructed. After finishing, 7 slices of each material were surface treated by Cojet repair system (tribochemical silica-coating). The other 7 slices were sandblasted and treated with Clearfil repair kit. Before any surface treatment was performed, each slice was embedded in an acrylic block for easier handling and fixation during shear bond testing. Samples were loaded under shear at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min until failure in a Universal Testing Machine. The shear bond strength data was collected and tabulated. A two-way analysis of variance ANOVA was used to statistically analyze the effect of surface treatment on the shear bond strength between the ceramic materials and the composite resin. Samples were examined by a Scanning electron microscope (SEM) to identify the mode of failure.
Results: The results revealed that for IPS e.max CAD group; Cojet surface treatment recorded statistically significant higher shear bond strength mean value than Clearfil surface treatment, while for inCoris ZI mono L group it was found that Cojet surface treatment recorded statistically non-significant higher shear bond strength mean value than Clearfil surface treatment. It also showed that With Cojet surface treatment the IPS e.max CAD recorded statistically significant higher
shear bond strength mean value than inCoris ZI mono L, while for Clearfil the inCoris ZI mono L recorded statistically significant higher shear bond strength mean value than the IPS e.max CAD. Regardless to ceramic group, it was found that Cojet surface treatment recorded statistically significant higher shear bond strength mean value than Clearfil surface treatment. While irrespective of surface treatment, totally it was found that IPS e.max CAD recorded statistically non-significant higher shear bond strength mean value than inCoris ZI mono L.
Conclusion: It can be concluded that: The bond between composite resin and either IPS e.max CAD or inCoris ZI mono L, is more resistant to shear stresses after Cojet surface treatment than after Clearfil surface traetment. Cojet repair system shows higher shear bond strength with IPS e.max CAD than with inCoris ZI mono L zirconia, while Clearfil kit shows higher shear bond strength with inCoris ZI mono L zirconia than with IPS e.max CAD. IPS e.max CAD samples treated with Cojet surface treatment showed the highest shear bond strength mean values, while those treated with Clearfil surface treatment showed the lowest shear bond strength mean values.
