Abstract

The problem of energy consumption attracted the attention of researchers these years because of its high generation cost and its impact on environment. Heating and cooling of buildings consume 40% of energy consumed by total activities in buildings envelopes and responsible for almost 16% of Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the air. On the other hand, agricultural and animal wastes are burnt or thrown in the infrastructure. That is responsible for significant ecological problems around the world. Moreover, Egypt imports only in 2014 by almost two billions dollars solid wood panels and wood composites panels. This is considered a burden on the Egyptian economy especially on the economic crises we live in these days. Therefore, two products were produced of pulled wool fibers and flax fibers wastes to be used in thermal insulation applications and an alternative to composite wood panels. A high loft nonwoven mats with different blends of wool and flax 100% wool fibers, 75% wool / 25% flax, 50% wool / 50% flax and 25% wool / 75% flax in an attempt to get the optimum thermal properties. In addition to, structural/thermal panels with and without skin of 100% pulled wool fibers in different densities of 500, 800 and 1000 kg/m3. Thermal conductivity test and other physical and mechanical testing were applied on the manufactured specimens.
