Abstract

As a result of population density in Egypt, especially the urban areas and large development in all cities emerged the importance of tall buildings. It has become a new challenge to structural and geotechnical engineers. The tall buildings, led to increase the displacement of top floors due to lateral loads and increase the settlement due to vertical loads. Using shear wall in buildings are quite common in some earthquake prone regions. During seismic excitation, they contribute in absorbing moments and shear forces and reduce torsional response. Usually, architectural design requires opening for doors and windows in shear walls. As a result of these opening, the value of displacement, drift, and moment on the piles raft changed. Previous researches studied the behavior of shear walls with regular and staggered openings and the size of the opening and did not take their effect on foundation. The present work adopts the effect of shear walls with openings on the foundation and subsoil. In this research, a finite element method use to analyze buildings with shear walls that have regular and staggered openings under seismic action by ETABS programe. The numerical model was carried out by ELPLA programe resting on pile raft with different piles configurations and using the continuum model in subsoil. The behavior of Soil-Structure Interaction on superstructures of 20, 25, and 30 storey rested on a pile raft is investigated. The building was located in Port-Said city zone which is mainly characterized with a soft clay soil. The results showed that the openings in the shear walls have an impact on the value of the settlement. Also, the staggered openings are more preferable more than the regular, and the effect of pile length in clay soil is greater than the pile diameter.
