Abstract There are number of drugs available for treatment of epilepsy in modern therapy, but the major disadvantage is their chronic side effects. One of three patients is resistant to antiepileptic drugs, thus there is a need for new drugs which has minimum side effects and least interactions and provides more effectiveness. Treatment of epilepsy with herbal drugs seems to be more beneficial due to fewer side effects, acting at target site and having the same mechanism of action of synthetic drugs. Phoenix dactylifera, nigella sativa and pimpinella anisum are used in traditional medicine as anticancer, antioxidant, neuroprotective, hepato protective and antibacterial agent. The aim of the present study was to clarify anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effect of hydro alcoholic extract of phoenix dactylifera, nigella sativa oil and pimpinella anisum oil by using pentylenetetrazole as Convulsant agent and sodium valproate as standard anticonvulsant drug for the first experiment and their effect was determined by biochemical tests and histopathological changes. For the second experiment (maximal electric shock) phenytoin sodium was used as standard anticonvulsant drug Application of neurotoxicity tests as rotarod test, forced swim test and horizontal screen test was the third experiment.
