Abstract

The liver is the main target organ for the toxicity of several compounds due to its anatomical vicinity to the gastrointestinal organs which makes it receive concentrated forms of any ingested harmful substances.A lot of chemicals are currently used in agriculture. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are the most commonly used among them. PGRs (also known as plant hormones or phytohormones) are chemical substances that regulate plant growth and development. Gibberellic acid (GA3) is one of the PGRs which is widely used in Egypt. It has extremely valuable applications in agriculture. It is used for promoting cell elongation, cell division and growth of many plants. However, GA3 has many deleterious effects on different organs of the body. The aim of this study was to assess the deleterious effect of GA3 on the liver of albino rats and to evaluate the potential protective role of nigella sativa oil (NSO) and grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on these effects using different histological and biochemical techniques. Stained paraffin and frozen sections of the liver were examined by light microscope, ultrathin sections were examined by transmission electron microscope, biochemical study, and statistical study were done. The results showed that gibberellic acid can cause severe histological and biochemical changes in the liver of albino rats which couldn’t be ameliorated by its withdrawal. This is due to the oxidative stress induced by it as well as due to its role in disturbance of the antioxidant system. Nigella sativa oil and grape seed proanthocyanidin extract have a beneficial role in overcoming the adverse effects of gibberellic acid probably due to their excellent antioxidant properties and highly nutritional values which was more pronounced in nigella sativa oil.
